Emissions Test in GA – Requirements
Who needs testing?
For 2025 vehicle registration, emissions testing is required if your vehicle is a gasoline-powered car or light-duty truck (model years 2001–2022, with a gross vehicle weight rating of 8,500 pounds or less) and is registered in one of the following counties: Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry, Paulding, or Rockdale.
Testing Frequency
Once per year. An emissions inspection is valid for 12 months or one registration renewal, by the same owner.
When to test
Georgia’s Clean Air Force (GCAF) recommends testing 4–6 weeks before your registration renewal date (typically your birthday). Vehicles can be tested well in advance if the owner of the vehicle will be out of the area at the time of registration.
What tests will be performed?
Vehicles subject to emissions testing will undergo a three-part inspection:
- OBD Test – This diagnostic test reviews the vehicle’s emissions control performance history.
- Fuel Cap Inspection – Ensures the fuel cap seals properly to prevent vapor leaks.
- Catalytic Converter Check – A visual inspection to confirm the catalytic converter is present and has not been tampered with or removed.
What Happens if I fail the Emissions Test in Augusta, GA?
Most well-maintained vehicles pass the emissions test on the first try unless there’s an unrepaired component failure or a manufacturer defect. Testing standards are designed to reflect the age of your vehicle and the emissions control technology available when it was built. If your vehicle does not pass, it will need to be repaired and retested.
- A failed test means you cannot receive your registration tag or decal.
- Unpaid ad valorem taxes may result in a 10% penalty — pay by the renewal due date!

About Georgia’s Clean Air Force (GCAF)
Georgia’s Clean Air Force (GCAF) is the official vehicle emissions inspection and maintenance program managed by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD). Its mission is to help reduce harmful vehicle emissions and improve air quality across the state—especially in the 13 metro Atlanta counties where testing is required.
Through partnerships with certified inspection stations like Butler Automotive, GCAF ensures that vehicles meet Georgia’s environmental standards before registration can be renewed. Testing helps identify vehicles that may need repairs to reduce emissions and stay compliant with clean air laws.
