That annoying tire light on your dash is trying to do two things: keep you safe and keep you from wasting gas. All passenger vehicles manufactured since 2007 are equipped with this function. Since the systems have been in place, average fuel economy has improved (from fewer people running on underinflated tires) and tire blowouts have become less frequent. As a driver, it is important to know how to interpret the tire warning light when it appears. Basically a TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) light indicates one of three conditions:

1. One or more tires is slightly low in air pressure due to normal seepage or temperature change…Air needs to be added.
2. One or more tires is severely low in air pressure due a puncture in the tire…The tire needs to be repaired or replaced.
3. The system itself is malfunctioning due to a faulty sensor or faulty communication.
